I went to the Pharmacy this week….

Modern medicine versus Natural Solutions (there seems to be a pill for everything)

My dad had surgery this week and I went to the Pharmacy to pick up his pain killers.  I decided to just hang out there while they filled it. People watching is my favorite hobby.  What I witnessed made me very sad.  1st I want to talk about the line I watched it was at 3 pm in the afternoon and at one point there was a line of 22 people.  That right there made shocked me.  I counted 33 people there in the 20 minutes I waited.

It’s funny I think we have laws that are for privacy but sitting there I heard some very shocking conversations.  One person picked up 3 prescriptions that cost her $917.00, another was forced to choose because the 2 inhalers were over $1000.00 total. SHe chose the one that was 350.00. There were prescriptions for sleep, pain, heart meds, flu, bronchitis, strep, ADD.  That’s only the ones I heard. PS: that was the patients talking to the Pharmacist not the Pharmacist blurting that out.  I started researching a little and while none of the studies are very current (I am sure the numbers would be even larger) I found this. It was shocking to me.

The Percent of persons using at least one prescription drug in the past 30 days: 48.7% (2009-2012)Percent of persons using three or more prescription drugs in the past 30 days: 21.8% (2009-2012)
Percent of persons using five or more prescription drugs in the past 30 days: 10.7% (2009-2012)

These numbers just amaze me.  I am aware that there are some needed medications.  I know there are other alternatives.  We can find natural solutions that will not cause us to go pharmaceutical poor and not cause us long term damage that will require more Dr visits and drugs. Running to the Dr for every little thing should not be our 1st reaction. Taking the natural approach should be our 1st step to wellness.  This is my wellness bible.  I reach for this book when anything is going on.

  1. I love this blog. My diffuser is one of my best friends. I love having it for sleep but mostly just for the peace and relaxation it brings from the essential oils.

Also, believe it or not, it is nice having the diffuser going if you are doing yoga or exercises for aches.
